Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company has partnered with the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) to sensitize and encourage its staff to donate blood.
A statement by the Head, Corporate Communication, Abdulazeez Abdullahi, said the blood donation was part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative aimed at deepening its relationship with communities where it operates.
Speaking at the event, which took place at the Head Office of the company, the Representative of NBTS, Mrs. Clara Mara, said the donors stand to benefit a lot.
“The donors will feel energized as a result of donating excess blood they do not need. A donor will reduce body weight because there is a loss of above 600 calories when you donate and your heart pumps better and your body gets rid of excess iron”.
Explaining further, Mrs. Mara said there are eligibility test for voluntary donors, which according to her is to ensure that no one is put at risk. She citied breastfeeding mothers, pregnant women and the sick as some of those exempted.
Kaduna Electric staff were given a short tutorial on the benefits of donating blood and later screened; those who were fit and willing took part in the exercise.
Mrs. Mara expressed gratitude to the management of Kaduna Electric for identifying with a cause that saves lives describing the company as “compassionate and socially responsible”.
She charged the staff to become recruiters themselves who will help spread the word to others and tackle the ignorance associated with blood donation
