Commotion Trails Police Denial Of Tambuwal ,Others Access To National Assembly

The entrance to the national Assembly was  blockaded by heavily armed policemen  Thursday morning as the Speaker  Aminu Tambuwal and other lawmakers attempted to  enter the national assembly.

It was  real, sordid  drama which television channels beamed across the nation. The speaker was seen trying to talk to a police office who simply walked away.At that time , the speaker and other were denied access to the national assembly.

Disturbed by the development, some impatient lawmakers began to shake the  iron-gate violently.Lawmakers were seen climbing the gate to gain entrance.Reports also  said the gate  was eventually forced open.

Later   there was commotion within the House of Representatives. In fact some senators were seen also on the floor of the  lower chamber.Tear gas was also used by the  security forces within the national assembly, reports said.

Senate president David Mark also intervened .Reports said , Mark has already ordered the shutting down of the National Assembly till Tuesday next week, while the Inspector General of PoliceSuleiman Abba has been summoned to explain Thursday’s police action at the national assembly.

The Speaker had earlier in the week directed House of Reps members to cut short their recess  and reconvene today in order to consider President Goodluck Jonathan’s letter seeking an extension of the State of emergency in the north eastern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.

But there is an  unresolved “crisis” over the defection of Tambuwal from PDP to APC.The PDP and apparently even the presidency wants the Speaker removed. The PDP immediately asked the speaker to do the “needful”.

The Police and the SSS have withdrawn their men attached to Tambuwal even before being ‘sacked’ by the House. So even before Thursday’s blockade the police had  curiously made its position on the status of Tambuwal after his defection known.

Meanwhile, the Senate had failed  on Wednesday to approve the president’s request for an extension of the emergency rule.

In sum, the past few weeks have been characterized by a frosty executive-legislative relationship. How the worsening crisis will be resolved remains to be seen.
