(Sokoto – Wednesday – October 29, 2013 ) General Muhammadu Buhari, Atiku Abubakar, former vice President; Bola Tinubu, APC chieftain; Alhaji Kawu Baraje, nPDP national chairman and his counterpart of the APC, Bisi Akande, stormed Sokoto Tuesday in what could easily pass for a political gathering .
Others included state governors of Adamawa, Kano, Rivers and Jigawa states, Murtala Nyako, Musa Kwankwaso, Rotimi Amaechi, Sule Lamido and Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former Osun state governor.
Also ,for the first time in Sokoto, former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari met former President Shehu Shagari at the gathering.
They were in Sokoto for the occasion of the inauguration ceremony of Sokoto State University, which was performed by Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, former Head of State.
Gen. Abdulsalami who was also at Sultan palace stressed the need for peaceful coexistence amongst all classes of people. “Peaceful coexistence is an important ingredient and basis for development,” he stressed and added that
Amaechi said that there is no state or country that could grow without education in the same vein that Atiku Abubakar said, “No community or nation can develop without education” and urged the people to invest in it.
Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar called on people to endow chairs and that the Sultanate would “ensure that the University does not close on strike for an hour.”
Speaker Aminu Tambuwal who led members of the National Assembly from Sokoto state commended governor Wamakko for the University project, which is situated at Madorawa along Airport road.
Governor Aliyu Wamakko, who said that he received the news of Gen. Buhari’s visit to attend the occasion that morning, took swipes at critics of the projects who thought that it was a white project saying, “Today by the grace of God, we are here to celebrate what some people were pessimistic about.”
Atiku Abubakar, Bola Tinubu and Gen. Buhari took turns to give their goodwill messages.
Those who also attended the occasion included Emirs of Zurmi, Kwatarkwashi, Maradun, Bakura, Tsafe, Bukkuyyun and Maru from Zamfara state; Emirs of Gwandu and Argungu, Alhaji Samaila Mera and Alhaji Bashir Iliyasu from Kebbi state as well as the Chancellor of the State University, the Emir of Dutse, Alhaji Nuhu Sanusi.
At the international level, the Minister of Education as well as the Governor of Tawa state in Niger Republic, Mamadou Diallo and Alhaji Salihu Barmo, respectively witnessed the occasion. Diallo represented Nigerien President, Ahamadou Yousouf.
