The 2nd Korea-Nigeria Poetry Feast, a one day commemorative event jointly organized by Abuja -based Arojah Concepts and the Korean Cultural Centre of the Embassy of the Republic of South Korea will hold Wednesday 21st March (at 4.00pm) at the Korean Cultural Centre, 2nd floor, Rivers House, Ralph Shodeinde Street (opposite Ministry of Finance) in the Central Business District of the FCT.
It is part of the celebration of this year’s World Poetry Day, so designated by the UNESCO with the aim to “support linguistic diversity through poetic expression and to offer endangered languages the opportunity to be heard within their communities”.
“This Day is meant to support poetry and help us return to the oral tradition of poetry recitals, promote teaching poetry, restore a dialogue between poetry and the other arts such as theatre, dance, music, painting and so on, support small publishers and create an attractive image of poetry in the media so that the art of poetry will no longer be considered an outdated form of art but one which can be used as a veritable means of effective communication,” Prince Jerry Adesewo of Arojah Concepts explained, adding that it was this UNESCO set objectives that inspired his team to bring poets and lovers of poetry together to a feast of poetry in commemoration of the day.
Interested poets will have sent in 5 poems each based on the theme: Intangible Cultural Heritage ties between Korea-Nigeria to arojahconcepts@yahoo.com on before 10th March 2012.
Intangible Cultural Heritage means the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, skills – as well as the instruments, objects, artifacts and cultural spaces associated therewith – which communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognize as part of their cultural heritage.
This intangible cultural heritage, transmitted from generation to generation, is constantly recreated by communities and groups in response to their environment, their interaction with nature and their history, and provides them with a sense of identity and continuity, thus promoting respect for cultural diversity and human creativity.
Selected poems will be featured/performed at the World Poetry Day event, the Korean Cultural Centre website and in a proposed cross-cultural anthology.
