Former Abia State , Dr Orji Uzor Kalu has described the influence of the All Progressive Congress ( APC), as an alternative platform that will bring about democratic change in Nigeria.Kalu said what is happening in Nigeria with the APC is not a bad deal . He said it is one of the ways to move the country forward through a two party structure which provides the masses with a democratic alternatives.
Speaking in an interview on arrival from the United Arab Emirates ( UAE), aboard Emirates flight at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, Kalu said the existence of another formidable political alternative is the only way the ruling People’s Democratic Party ( PDP), could sit up from its lukewarm attitude as a dominant party .
Kalu said :” Although, the essence of All Progressives Congress, APC, is very good. APC is heading for democratic change. If there are no two main political parties, the country will not move forward. There must be an alternative. What is happening in Nigeria with APC is not a bad deal, rather a good deal for the poor masses of this country who should have
alternatives.Alternative is always good in any system. May be the lukewarm attitude of PDP is that they feel, they are the dominant party, which no one can challenge.Alternative is very essential, I support it and I will live for it and I believe we should be able to work for it. ”
Kalu however called on the five governors that defected to the APC from the PDP to consider coming back to the party as the exit of the former national chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur will create an opportunity for stakeholders to rebuild the party .
He said :” I believe that our governors that have gone should come back immediately. They should come back and build the brand. I knew Bamanga would leave. This was why I told you late last year that the party would be rebranded.I told you we are going to rebrand the party. I knew by January that Bamanga would leave. We are going to rebrand the party; we are going to put in our energy, money and everything possible on earth to make PDP to be where every candidate will get one vote in the primary and win that election. Not a situation where someone else will win election and another person will go and run election. We are not going to accept that, we are going to make PDP to be very credible and
there is no question as to who is the leader of PDP. Jonathan is the leader of PDP, he is the president of Nigeria and the leader of the party. So, he should come out as soon as possible to show everybody the quality of leadership we expect from him.
He should say no to everything he is supposed to say no without looking at anybody’s face.
He has done what needed to be done by accepting Bamanga Tukur’s resignation letter. So, the governors would come together and come back. We need them.”
On the resignation of Tukur, Kalu said :” For every tenure, there must be an end
and this is what the stakeholders have been clamouring for.Democracy is about the people and I believe President Jonathan, Chairman, Board of Trustees and other members of the caucus have done what they ought to dobecause democracy essentially is about the people. If majority say they don’t what somebody, the person should take honourable exit
and respect the view of the people. I also praise Alhaji Bamanga Tukur for his courage, instead of fighting and bickering, he was able to say no, ‘I would resign on my own’ and this is how democracy should be practiced.
