A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Eseme Eyiboh, has urged the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, Mr Onofiok Luke, to restore peace in the house by rescinding his decision on four defectors.

Eyibo, who is also the spokesperson of the Akwa Ibom APC Governorship Campaign Council made the call at news briefing in Uyo on Thursday, saying that the speaker’s action was in error.

He said the speaker ought to have await court verdict on the case of the four defectors before declaring their seats vacant.

Eyibo described the speaker’s action as a rape on democracy because the legislature is the bastion of democracy.

“The speaker should have been able to separate activism from lawmaking and by allowing himself to be influenced by Gov. Udom Emmanuel in that matter.

“It meant that there is actually no guarantee for the independence of the State House of Assembly.

“Aside that, the speaker has no constitutional backing to declare those seats vacant because he was aware of the motion for stay of execution, he was also aware of the arguments of the lawyers in court.

“He is also at fault in his application of Section 109 because when the member representing Urueffong Oruko, Mr Asuquo Archibong, defected there was no crisis in the party,” he said.

Eyibo added: “Meanwhile, when the APC lawmakers defected from the PDP, the party was undergoing a merger and they said that they don’t want to be part of the merger.”

The former lawmaker said that APC remained a law abiding party. (NAN)
