Rivers state Governor, Rt. Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has condemned the killing of the State Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Julius Nwaofu by unidentified gunmen in Port Harcourt.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. David Iyofor, Amaechi decried the dastardly act calling it “wicked and atrocious at this time in the life of our nation and state.”
While consoling the bereaved family and ANPP members, the governor made it abundantly clear that the police must get to the root of the murder.
He directed that all security agencies in the state must work assiduously to ensure that the perpetrators of the evil crime are caught and brought to book in no distant time.
“As a State government, we will ensure that the security agencies do not relent until the criminals behind this heinous act are captured and face the full wrath of the law,” Amaechi said.
He further urged everyone in the State to remain calm as the government is working closely with law enforcement agents to rid the state of such inhuman and unlawful activities.
Also ,Rivers State Government has promised to collaborate more with the Nigerian Navy on improving the security status of the state.The state governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi spoke on Wednesday while laying the foundation stone for the construction of 50 units of studio flats for naval officers at the Naval Ship Pathfinder Base in Rumuluomeni, Port Harcourt.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. George Feyii, Amaechi said,” We need to recognise that with the collaboration of officers of the Navy we have a peaceful atmosphere in the state. ” He emphasized that more of such collaboration is germane in creating a peaceful atmosphere for business and development, stressing that the State Government had embarked on the project to cement relations between it and the navy.
He implored the officers to make appropriate use of the facility, while urging the contracting firm to deliver the project as promised in three months.
Speaking earlier, Commanding Officer of the Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Olufemi Ogunjimi said the project is timely considering the dearth of accommodation for officers.
He thanked the State Government for responding to its plight noting that the new accommodation will ensure discipline and camaderie among officers in accordance with naval tradition. “We will ever be grateful for this gesture,” Ogunjimi said.
Also speaking, Commanding Officer of the Naval Ship Pathfinder, Navy Commander Oluntuji Vinci Fadeyi thanked the State Government for the project, and expressed the hope that it will further improve state security and welfare of men of the navy.
He remarked that the government has displayed good gesture in promoting understanding between it and security personnel.
