Workers’ union yesterday urged the staff not to go into their offices in order to avoid being compelled to sign a purported severance letter which had been loaded into the headquarters ,Newsdiaryonline.com learnt.
Workers were shocked that heavily armed Mobile policemen were drafted to the PHCN headquarters very early yesterday.Each floor was said to have had equally armed Mopol at the ready for any eventuality. The armed police replaced the regular security which had been in place earlier.
Newsdiaryonline.com sources said the severance terms which the FG wants the workers to sign are disagreeable because the amounts being offered are not commensurate with the years already put in by the workers.Senior managers will be made to sign for N700,000 severance package while workers who have worked for 11 years are to get N85,000 .This is viewed as unacceptable by the union .
Meanwhile, most workers have stayed away from their offices in the headquarters today as the union and the Labour officials are said to have commenced emergency meetings since yesterday with a view to resolving the matter.Labour is fully behind PHCN workers a source said.
The recent decision to hand over the transmission company to an 8 man team of Manitoba company in a strange management contract of $23million has heightened tension at PHCN.Despite union’s reservations, the FG has gone ahead with the contract which workers view as a rip off.
