AEDC Inaugurates Probe Panel on Electrical Accident in Nyanya

An 8-man Investigative Team set upto investigate the circumstances surrounding the electrical accident which occurred on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 in a neighbourhood of Nyanya, a suburb of Abuja, the nation’s capital has been inaugurated by the AEDC with a mandate to unravel the immediate and remote causes of the incident.

A press statement issued by Ahmed Shekarau, Head, Public Relations & Media of the Company said a preliminary report on the accident showed that an 11-Kv wire snapped and fell on the roofing sheet of a house in Nyanya leading to outbreak of fire that was alleged to have led to the unfortunate death of a man and a child, while a woman sustained injuries.

While inaugurating the panel today in Abuja, the Director, Risk and Compliance of the AEDC, Engr. Collins Chabuka said that the decision of the Company to set up a probe panel was in line with the internal AEDC Incident Reporting and Investigation Procedure Guidelines and industry best practice. “It is AEDC’s internal Health and Safety Policy requirements that all accidents are investigated by independent internal competent persons with extensive industry background, competence and knowledge. The purpose of the investigation is to highlight the shortcomings that may have led to the incident and also to recommend industry best practice and remedial measures to prevent a recurrence”, he said.

Describing the incident as “most unfortunate”, the AEDC Director, said that the Company had complied with regulatory requirements by officially notifying the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Nigeria Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) of the accident.

While commiserating with the family of the deceased and other members of the Nyanya Community, the AEDC Director used the opportunity to appeal to members of the public to avoid encroaching into the right of way of electricity lines.

The terms of reference of the Investigative Panel set up by the Company include:  To establish the root causes of the incident.

Conduct a technical assessment of the equipment and the supply network and advise whether the equipment and network operated normally during the incident, and

Identify remedial measures to prevent a recurrence.

The investigative panel is being chaired by Engineer Mohammed Ainoko Sule, an experienced Nigerian Electricity Industry professional with over 26 years of experience in Distribution Network Operations, Maintenance and Protection System. Also among members of the team are the Regional Head of Operations in FCT North, Engineer Pope Shima, the Company’s Head of Health and Safety, Engineer Dirisu Biodun, Team Lead, Security, FCT, George Williams.

Other members of the Panel are Ag. Head, Human Resource Operation, Mr. Joseph Adeniyi, Head, Public Relations and Media, Ahmed Shekarau, Regional Team Lead, Legal Services, FCT Central, Miss Mimi Angyu, and the Regional Team Lead, Health and Safety& Environment, FCT, Engr. Tony Adolor, who serves as Secretary to the team. The Panel has two weeks to submit its report.
