Niger State Governor,Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu on Monday failed to recognize the newly elected Speaker of the Niger state House of Assembly, Mr Isah Kawu at a public function which they both attended, just as the state Assembly complex has remained under lock and key with heavy police presence.
The function, which was the commissioning of the Minna Building Materials Market had in attendance the impeached Speaker, Barrister Adamu Usman, the new Speaker, Kawu, some members of the House of Assembly and other dignitaries.
Aliyu, when reading the protocol before his speech greeted the members of the House of Assembly without recognizing either of the Speakers.
He simply addressed them as, “my employers.”
Both the impeached Speaker and the new Speaker were omitted from the protocol list, neither was the sitting arrangement done to recognize the new Speaker.
Our reporter observed that the seat where the new Speaker ought to sit was occupied by the impeached Speaker.
This development however contradicts the court order obtained by the Governor last
week, to stop the House of Assembly from making any move to impeach him.The suit which recognized Isah Kawu as the Speaker of the House of Assembly.
Speaking after the event, Kawu said “I saw the omission, it was not hidden, I am sure everyone noticed it but one certain fact is that it does not change anything. I still remain the Speaker of the House of Assembly.”
Meanwhile, the Niger state House of Assembly remains locked preventing the legislators from performing their legislative activities.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ibrahim Gambo said the Police are guarding the Assembly complex in order to safeguard it.
