Senate at the plenary on Thursday requested President Goodluck Jonathan to return to it the original copy of the constitutional amendment bill it earlier sent to the President .Jonathann in a letter to the senate president withheld his assent to the bill.
Thursday’s request followed a motion by the Deputy Senate President Senator Ike Ekweremadu that the original copy of the bill was returned to the Senate as indicated in the President letter. “We at the Senate committee observed that the Original copy of the fourth alteration Act 2015 has not be returned to the Senate as indicated in the Mr. President’s letter and as such we are asking the Senate to ask the President to returned the original copy of the bill that was sent to him back to the Senate” Ekweremadu said.
When the motion was put into voting by the Senate President Senator David Mark, it was unanimously supported by the Senators.
President Goodluck Jonathan in a letter addressed to the Senate President Senator David Mark remitted the bill back to the Senate on the grounds that there was no evidence that the bill satisfied the strict requirement of section 9 sub section 3 of the 1999 constitution.
