President Goodluck Jonathan has denied allegations that he was plotting to sack Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission ,INEC ,Professor Attahiru Jega.
He denied the allegation during an interview with Aljazeera’s Yvonne Ndege in Lagos.He specifically denied ever telling “any human being on earth about changing INEC Chairman”.
On the alleged plot o sack Jega,Jonathan responded :“Except somebody is insinuating that the Chairman has done something wrong. You cannot change an officer, except the person has done something wrong.”
He said further , “Government, whether at the federal or state level, president or governor, does not wake up and change somebody, especially somebody like the INEC Chairman, except that person has done something wrong.
In Jonathan’s words,“INEC is a very sensitive body. For me to change INEC Chairman Nigerians will ask questions. So, you cannot wake up and change INEC Chairman.”
He spoke also his government battle against Boko Haram and corruption.Most Nigerians that have been assailed with reports of the plot against Jega remain apprehensive .One observer said Tuesday “ it is better to be vigilant and watch out for what they do instead of believing what they say hook, line and sinker.”
