Reports from Abeokuta indicate that Ogun State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party said former President Olusegun Obasanjo quit the party hours before his expulsion from the party was announced .
The former president himself confirmed this while speaking his residence during a visit by his PDP ward members .He said he knew about the party’s moves two hours ahead and that was why he quit PDP and tore his card publicly.

He said “They don’t need to bother themselves.Here’s your membership card, take it.From today on, in the presence of all us and with your support, I am not going to be in any political party in Nigeria
Speaking on his future plans the former president said having quit PDP, he would not join any other party.”I have told you before that I became president on the platform of PDP. Once I leave the PDP, I will not join any party.
“I will only be a Nigerian.I am ready to work with anybody regardless of political affiliation. Why would some people say they want to send me away?” he queried
Obasanjo said henceforth, he wants to be recognized as a statesman. “I am no more a politician but a statesman both internally and externally”
