Students of University of Lagos have been ordered to vacate the campus today .Also, academic activities have been suspended.These actions have been taken on the heels of endless protest by the students since yesterday.
This morning students barricaded the 3rd Mainland Bridge thus affecting traffic flow .Third Mainland Bridge is a major businesses route in Nigeria’s commercial capital,Lagos.
The students began their protests on Tuesday, hours after President Goodluck Jonathan renamed UNILAG as Moshood Abiola University,Lagos in honour of the late winner of June 12,1993 presidential elections.
A mixed reactions have trailed Jonathan’s announcement.Aside from the students’ protests, some observers felt it was ill advised especially since there seemed to have been no consultation with UNILAG authorities before the announcement. Opposition politicians said it was equally a wrong move.The local ASUU officials vowed to resist the move.UNILAG Alumni members also kicked against it.
But some Nigerians have also praised the decision saying it was a good and courageous move.Col. Abubakar Umar, former governor of Kaduna state said the decision to honour Abiola was long overdue .He added that Jonathan’s move was a courageous one.
