At least eight persons have been confirmed dead in a road accident which occurred at Ugbogui axis of the Benin-Ore-Lagos carriageway.
Commander of Federal Road Safety Commission, FRCS, Ekiadolor Tollgate Unit, Mr Adewale Ameen, who confirmed the accident, said the accident involved an 18-seater bus with plate number CT 874 FST and a Mercedes Benz truck with plate number MUS 570 SS, belonging to Lord Chosen Charismatic Movement.
While attributing the accident to fatigue on the part of the bus driver, he said the bus driver was said to have rammed into the stationery truck while driving from Lagos to Benin.
He said;” Although the bus driver survived, eight passengers died. It was an avoidable accident because the truck parked well away from the road.
“From my interaction with the survivors, they had consistently warned the driver about his recklessness before the accident occurred. They were coming from Lagos after an all-night prayer session.”
Meanwhile, the FRSC Benin Zone said that it would in the spirit of the valentine season caution offending motorist rather than ask them to pay fine.
The Zonal Commanding Officer, Mr Charles Akpabio, whose command comprised Edo, Delta, and Anambra states, said this in an interview with newsmen in Benin.
He said; “The operation valentine, the Commands initiative, is our gesture to waive the fine for offenders and to share with the road users the spirit of love which the valentine represents”.
