No fewer than 12 inmates of the Oko Federal Prisons in Benin may have escaped while another 12 were re-arrested during the jailbreak caused by a criminal gang that invaded the prisons in the early hours of Sunday.
Sources at the prisons disclosed that after the criminals detonated explosive devices at the entrance of the prison on their arrival, there was commotion as the main gate of the facility was damaged opening the way for those who had the courage to flee.
However, as those were escaping, security personnel comprising prison officials, soldiers and policemen who responded to distress calls by the warders shot at an unspecified number of inmates as they made to flee from the prison.
Controller of Prisons, Mr. Ewulo, could not confirm the exact number of those wounded in the raid as the authorities of the prison is still said to be checking through its records to ascertain the actual figure.
