FORMER bursar of Yaba College of
Technology, Joseph Babatunde Akeju, has
raised an alarm over the alleged
fraudulent manner the immediate past
rector of the college ran the
institution for seven years.
Speaking with our reporter last week in
Lagos,
Akeju disclosed that in December 2002,
Chief (Mrs) Odugbesan, who was then
rector of Yabatech handed over the
rectorship of the institution to
Olubunmi Owoso.
According to Akeju, when Odugbesan
handed over to Owoso, the college had
N175 million in the bank account as
internally generated revenue.
In addition to this whopping sum, YCT
guest house was generating about
N850,000 monthly for the college, while
the bakery owned by the institution was
equally doing fine during the tenure of
Odugbesan.
However the former bursar disclosed that
as soon as Owoso became the rector of
Yabatech in 2002, he allegedly
squandered the millions in the account
of the college, dismantled the internal
financial control system that was making
it possible for the college to generate
as much as N850,000 every month.
As at the time Owoso was unceremoniously
removed as rector of Yabatech December
2009, the guest house, has been run down
by the Owoso regime, while the bakery
was making a miserable N300,000 every
month as revenue. Akeju, who was also
the chief accountancy lecturer at the
college said.
Apart from the looted millions of the
quest house and the bakery, the former
bursar equally accused Owoso of
allegedly hiring marabouts, prayer
warriors and babalawos with mouth
watering sums to fortify and protect
him while allegedly inflating contract
fees and awarding same to his friends.
‘When I first raised an alarm and
petitioned the police, EFCC ICPC and
other security agencies during my tenure
as bursar of the college, Owoso
immediately issued me queries in
order to intimidate, and threatened
my life on a number of occasions,
eventually dismissing me from the
services of the college, after using
money and contract to clip the wings of
some radical members of the governing
council of the college and the local
chapter fo ASUP.
'Though Owoso dismissed me from college
without paying my accumulated arrears of
salary, allowances and other benefits
for more than a year, my dream however
is to draw the attention of Mrs. Margret
Kudirat Oladejo, the new rector of
Yabatech to the fraudulent activities
unleashed on the college by Owoso.
These alleged criminal activities have
impacted negatively and embarrassingly
on the corporate image and reputation of
the college as well as its students,
staffers and other stakeholders, Akeju
