Academic Staff Union of University, ASUU, chairman and secretary, University of Ilorin branch have been suspended by the university administration after the local branch drew attention to illegal appointment of the vice chancellor’s second wife and her promotion in less than a year.

The academic union has been in the news lately after a series of whistle blowing on graft, extortion and nepotism perpetrated by successive vice chancellors in the university in nearly a decade.

In what perhaps might be a retaliation over those string of expose by the academic union, the duo of Dr Kayode Afolayan and Dr Solomon Oyelekan, chairman and secretary, respectively, of the local branch of ASUU  have been  suspended.

ASUU recently petitioned the university administration to various anti graft agencies on matters of illegal pension deduction, extortion of students and improper recruitment procedures.

Explaining the implication of the action, Ade Adejumo, PhD, zonal coordinator, ASUU, Ibadan Zone, in a release, warned that the action of the university poses a ‘grave danger’.

“We will not sit by and watch the continued victimization of our operatives and bastardization of the academia in University of Ilorin. If the federal government does not rein in this (move at)University of Ilorin, then the union should not be blamed for any industrial or other legitimate action that the union might take in consequence,” Adejumo said.

He also wondered how  the federal government can claim that it is encouraging citizens to ‘blow the whistle’ against corrupt officials while allowing its agencies to openly victimize whistle blowers.

It was  also learnt that ASUU, Unilorin had written to the vice chancellor, pointing out the illegality of the appointment of Taiwo Ambali, the vice chancellor’s second wife, and her subsequent promotion in less than one year.

As gathered, Mrs Ambali was appointed temporarily and without prior advertisement as required by law. Even more, the VC placed her on lecturer 1 step 7  when she was a fresh PhD holder and at the time when many PhD holding staff with years of service in the university are still lecturer 2.

On 30th September, 2016, Mrs Ambali was promoted to senior lecturer on CONUASS 05; and on a new salary of N3.1 million per annum.

The local academic Union had then written to VC, Ambali and the governing council of the university on the matter. Rather than respond, the university administration wrote a query to Afolayan and Oyelekan, accusing them of misconduct as lecturers and incitement against the VC.

Though the university requested that the teachers respond to the query in 48 hours, they were however suspended before the expiration of the ultimatum.

Efforts made to get further clarification from the university was not successful as Mr Kunle Akogun, head of the information department of the university could not be reached on cell phone.
