Police Games Begin As Zonal Teams Go For Medal Haul

    Competitions in the on-going Police Games “Port  Harcourt 2013” began in earnest at all venues yesterday on a very high note, with athletes keenly contesting spiritedly in their events, to win precious medals for their respective Zones.

    At the Liberation Stadium Elekahia, where the football tournament is being staged, six matches were played; four and two in the male and female categories respectively. In the first match of the day which kicked off at exactly 9.00 am, Zone 9 Umuahia walloped Zone Kano 1 by 3:1, to clinch the 3-points at stake. In other results, Zone 7 Abuja defeated Zone 6 Calabar (the host Zone) by 3:1. Zone 11 Osogbo beat Zone 4, Makurdi 3:1; while FHQ beat Zone 5 Benin by 2:1. In the female category, Zone 6 Benin walked over Zone 1, Kano; while Zone 2, Lagos defeated Zone 7, Abuja by 4:1

    Results of events competed for at the Civic Center (Agbani Derego Sports Complex), hosting all Marshall Art, indicate that medalists have already emerged in Karate, Taekwondo, and Judo. In the +100Kg category of Judo, David Joseph of Zone 11 clinched the gold, while the silver went to Victor Nwaozuzu of Zone 9. The Kayode Oyewole of Zone 2 and Ojah Ekpenyong of Zone FHQ won bronze medals each.

    Winners are also expected to emerge today (Tuesday)in the various categories of wrestling and boxing. Competitions in the in-door games of Table Tennis, Tennis, Squash have also begun in the same venue and are expected to be concluded by Thursday.

    At the Adokiye Amiesemaka Stadium, five matches were played in Hockey; 3 in the male and 2 in the female categories

    In the Tug-of-War pull held at the Police Children School, Zone 7 Abuja defeated Zone 2 in the male category; while Zone 9 won Zone 4 in the female category. In the same female group, FHQ defeated Zone 6; while Zone 2 crushed Zone 7.

    The Tournament is gaining momentum and more medal haul is expected today from various events at the different venues.
