There is palpable
excitement among PDP automatic delegates to
the PDP
Presidential
primaries in the South-west following
President Goodluck Jonathan’s invitation to
the PDP delegates of the zone for a meeting
in Ibadan on Sunday.
This is the fourth
meeting
in three weeks
that the President would be having
with
South-west delegates ahead of the PDP
primaries.
According to a source,
the delegates’ excitement stems from
assurances that they may each cart away
$10,000
as “transport
allowance.”
“Although we are not
enamoured of his candidacy, we will all be
at the meeting so that we can benefit from
the promised largesse,” an Oyo state
delegate privy
to
arrangements for the meeting said.
The Jonathan/Sambo campaign had empowered
Ministers following the resolution of a
caucus meeting to secure the much-needed
delegate count that will guarantee it the
PDP presidential ticket.
A PDP caucus meeting last week had resolved
that Ministers be empowered as a counter
force to State Governors whose support for
Jonathan’s bid can no longer be assured.
In line with this decision, a minister from
the South West met with PDP
delegates from Ondo State at the
end of which he splashed N500,000 on each of
four delegates.
In Borno State, however, all did not go well
with another minister from the North East
whose N500,000 “transport money”
offer to the state delegates was declined in
a clear rebuff.
