Presidency as
a family affair |

To some persons, Nigeria is the giant of
Africa, even with the stark realities
presently staring the country on the
face.Power supply from the almighty NEPA,
now renamed Power Holdings Company of
Nigeria is still epileptic, water has
refused to flow from our pipes, banks
have recently sacked more than 10,000
workers, thereby further compounding the
unemployment situations in the country,
while the security of lives and
properties is at the mercy of the poorly
funded and (badly )equipped
police, under the command of Ogbonna
Onovo, as inspector-general of police.
Without sounding like an incurable
pessimist, the giant of Africa status
accorded Nigeria certainly has a K-leg,
considering the overwhelming evidences
of poverty, deprivations,
marginalization, insecurity and
unemployment presently staring the
so-called giant of Africa on it face.
Beyond this preamble however, the recent
unfolding drama at the presidency
clearly shows that if nothing is
urgently done to reverse the process of
one woman desperately trying to hold
unto power, despite the stark realities
on ground, our corporate existence as a
country may be threatened. God forbid!
Turai, wife of ailing president Musa Yar
Adua by her words and deeds in recent
times thinks that the presidency is her
birth- right and therefore subjected to
her whims and caprices. For about 90
days that her husband and our president
was away in Saudi for urgent medical
attention, the first lady threw
patriotism, national unity and corporate
existence to the dustbin and literarily
ruled the country as the defacto
president, while Goodluck Jonathan, in
his usual manner was patiently waiting
and praying for the president to get
well soon.
As public spirited persons, the media,
human rights activists, some bold and
daring religious leaders were busy
calling on the president to follow due
process and temporarily hand over power
to Jonathan pending when he comes back
from Saudi, the first lady was busy
intimidating the incumbent vice
president, ministers and other
government officials, barking out orders
as if the presidency belongs to her and
quarrelling with any one opposed to her
ambition including her daughters.
Now that the president has sneaked into
the country, the wife is still busy
snubbing the vice president, who from
media reports has not yet set his eyes
on the boss, thereby giving the
impression that all the talks about
patriotism, national unity and corporate
existence may not appeal or make any
meaning to Turai, as long as she remains
the first lady of the federal republic
of Nigeria, even with the husband
presently on a sick bed
Honestly speaking, the manner Turai is
going about this issue of the presidency
is unfortunate, embarrassing, and does
not augur well for the peaceful
existence of Nigeria. While, persons
across the globe have called on Yar Adua
to resign and formally hand over the
presidency to Jonathan in the best
interest of the country and his health,
the wife, obviously driven by her
selfish ambition wants the husband to
hold unto the presidency and rule the
country even on his sick bed
As far as I am concerned this is wrong
and totally unacceptable. Turai cannot
heat up the system, placing the entire
country with its estimated 150 people on
red alert and subjected government
officials to her whims and caprises,
simply because she wants to continue to
be called first lady
Though something tells me loud and clear
that Turai, obviously hit by the stark
realities of the health of her husband
may be secretly packing her loads from
Aso Rock. Do not get me wrong. I am not
saying our beloved president, in whom I
in particular is well pleased is dead,
or about to die. I am one person that
prays and meditate for the president
silently, so that God or Allah could
restore his health to normalcy.
But, the truth is, since Yar Adua
sneaked into Nigeria a couple of days
ago, he has not spoken to us Nigerian
either on NTA, AIT, and Channels etc. We
are still awaiting that nationwide
broadcast
Until this is done, people and the media
will continue to speculate on the true
state of health of our president. I rest
my pen for now
