Labaran-Maku 600Former Information Minister Mr. Labaran Maku is depressed and deeply saddened by yet another callous murder of school children in Potiskum, Yobe State by terrorists.

While reacting to the killing of the students of Government Senior Science Secondary School, Potiskum, Mr. Maku said the despicable act was a calculated attempt by the insurgents to distract the attention of the public ahead of tomorrow’s declaration by President Goodluck Jonathan to seek another term in office.

The former Minister warned that as the 2015 general elections approached, more violence would be unleashed by terrorists particularly in the northern part of the country in order to make the government of President Jonathan unpopular.

Mr. Maku, however said the re-election of President Jonathan was the only hope of stability for Nigeria and urged Nigerians not to surrender to violence and evil.

He remarked that despite the efforts of President Jonathan to bring terrorism  to an end ‎in the north, including negotiations, which had never been done in any country, the terrorists had stepped up their attacks to achieve a political agenda.

He therefore cautioned against the wanton destruction of lives and properties for selfish political gains.

He said the latest killing of the Potiskum school children was a wake up call to all state and local governments in the north, ‎communities and other stakeholders to rise up to the challenge by being security conscious through mobilizing communities and exposing the suspicious elements in our midst.

Mr. Maku said the call for vigilance by all stakeholders in the north should be taken seriously because the nation was facing a guerrilla war in which the  enemy lived among the people and only the cooperation of all, could lead to the successful defeat of terrorism.

He said Nigerians had to fight terrorism like the way the nation fought the Ebola Virus Disease, which was imported into the country,  by dropping all political sentiments and confronting a common enemy.

Mr. Maku  also commiserated  with President Jonathan, the parents of those who lost their lives and the injured and all the youths and school children in the country over the dastardly and henous  act‎.

He prayed to God for the repose of the souls of the deceased while expressing confidence that through the combined efforts of security forces, states and local governments, and community stakeholders, terrorism would be defeated in parts of the country.
