(Press Statement) With the race for the February 14, 2015 presidential election hitting homewards, it has become imperative for Nigerians to ask the opposition All Progressive Congress (APC) to tell them what it plans to do with the reports of the National Sovereign Conference which was convened by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014.
Albeit great concern, APC and its presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari do not have any plan to implement reports of the National Sovereign Conference as it had from the onset condemned an initiative that will place Nigeria on an everlasting pedestal for fair and equitable development.
We note that APC’s consistent shout of “change” does not move any bit from their lips, otherwise, why would a change agent which APC and Buhari claim to be, reject a proposal for fair, equitable and just Nigeria for all.
President Jonathan had with great courage, initiated the Conference to amongst other things set Nigeria up for the next phase of her development as stated by the president in his inaugural address: “This conference is open for us to table our thoughts and positions on issues, and make recommendations that will advance our togetherness. The issues range from form of government, structures of government, devolution of powers, revenue sharing, resource control, state and local government creation, boundary adjustment, state police and fiscal federalism, to local government elections, indigeneship, gender equality and children’s rights, amongst others.
We must not approach these issues with suspicion and antagonism. Rather, we should be open-minded and work to achieve what is best for Nigeria. Even though you come to the Conference as nominees and representatives of different interest groups, I urge you all to make a more united, stronger, indivisible and prosperous Nigeria your preoccupation and reference point at this national gathering. Whatever the pressures on you may be, I call upon you to put the best interest of Nigeria before all other sectional or group interests.”
Going forward, we reckon that APC and Buhari in their shout for change do not consider a strong and united Nigeria with fairness and equity possible, hence, their antagonistic rejection of the Conference.
APC was against the national conference. APC refused to be represented at the national conference. These are facts not hear say nor speculations. A conference that sought to find ways to make us a better country, a more perfect nation yet APC rejected and stubbornly rejected it.
Not minding the cost to the nation, the billions spent from our oil and tax payers Buhari has vowed to dump the recommendations in a trash bin just as he trashed our metro line train project in Lagos.
A conference clamored by the Southwest and championed mostly by the Yoruba nation is now been considered irrelevant by APC and its paymasters.
The outcome of the National conference is the only thing that can bring a more permanent change we desire for this country and only PDP under the leadership of President Jonathan can guarantee its implementation. This country must be restructured for all to benefit, that is the change we need, not the mouthed change of APC.
