Ailing president
Umaru Musa YarAdua returned to Abuja
Wednesday morning from Saudi Arabia
under the
cover of darkness. There was no official
hint ahead of the president's
arrival .So the news took everybody by
surprise 'There were only rumours
few hours earlier in Abuja that the sick
president would be home today.
Even his arrival was
characterised by drama at the Nnamdi
Azikiwe International Airport Abuja as
journalists were barred from the
presidential wing.Reports said there
were two planes that arrived at about
2:00 AM in quick succession. As the
second plane landed a huge ambulance
moved closer and the ambulance was later
manouevred away from the view of those
at the airport as it headed perhaps to
Aso Rock,the presidential villa.
What this means is
that YarAdua is still very ill as
reports had clearly stated.Perhaps he
was brought home by his desperate cabal
to prevent the Acting President Goodluck
Jonathan from consolidating his hold on
power.His continuing illness may
be a bad sign for his associates as this
may intensify calls that YarAdua
should finally transfer power to his
deputy.Or will he stun the nation
further by addressing them anytime
soo?.That seems unlikely given the
secret way he returned. He acrually left
the country three months ago under cover
as journalists were not allowed to cover
the event.
Nigerians wait with
anxiety to see how events will unfold in
the hours ahead.
Also,YarAdua returned
just a day after Ojo Maduekwe confirmed
that the Federal Executive Council
delegation would finally leave for Saudi
Arabia on Monday Night. But YarAdua 's
men chose to take the wind off the sail
of the six -man delegation by returning
the sick president home. How long he will
stay in Nigeria before jetting out for
further treatment remains unclear .But
reports earlier had indicated that even
if he returned it might be for a
short period because he still needs
further medical attention.
It is also possible
that Saudi authorities encouraged
YarAdua's return in order to douse the
rising diplomatic tension between
Nigeria and Saudi Arabia.Reports over
the last week tended to blame the
Saudi monarchy for being responsible for
the inability of various delegations to
see president YarAdua in Jeddah.The
Saudi Ambassador to Nigeria had to
categorically deny such reports in an
unusual chat with the Nation newspapers.
