A new source
of anxiety in the oil rich Niger Delta
may soon compound the situation in the
region.Newsdiaryonline has learned that
there is growing tension between oil
companies and senior oil workers'
association ,PENGASSAN.In fact the
workers' union is said to be planning an
emergency action aimed at checkmating
the activities of the oil companies
The bone of contension is the decision
by oil companies to ''procedurally
sanction'' PENGASSAN members in the
affected companies.A labour source told
newsdiaryonline that this is being
interpreted to mean that the oil
companies are daring the oil workers'
union.
Moni Pulo is named among the oil
companies daring the
union.Newsdiaryonline was told that the
rising tension is so high that some
concerned PENGASSAN officials may have
notified the relevant government
agencies for swift intervention ,perhaps
to avert the negative impact of any
labour action by PENGASSAN.
This report comes on the heels of the
seemingly endless military action by the
military Joint Task Force JTF in
the Niger Delta. The past few days have
been suffused with claims of attacks
on Chevron facilities by the Movement
for the Emancipation of Niger
Delta,MEND.Though the Military Joint
Task Force in the region has played down
the scale of such attacks, it is a fact
that the instability of the region
remains intractable. Any labour action
by PENGASSAN is certain to further
compound a situation that has
defied all solutions so far..
