Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The police have released
the National Publicity Secretary of the Action
Congress (AC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed after he was
detained for hours for issuing a statement revealing
plans to assassinate the party’s chieftain, Senator
Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Earlier, the former Vice
President, Atiku Abubakar had asked the police to
free Alhaji Mohammed, saying that freedom of
expression is a God-given right which no government
can take away from its citizens. A statement by
Alhaji Abubakar’s spokesman, Garba Shehu, called on
the police to jettison the idea of detaining
suspects arbitrarily.
According to the former Vice President: “Lai is
doing a diligent job for the party and the nation
for which he must not be harassed.”
Weekly Trust gathered from a statement issued from
the AC national secretariat in Abuja via Alhaji
Mohammed’s email that the police detained its
spokesman yesterday over allegations that some
people are planning to assassinate Asiwaju Ahmed
Tinubu.
The statement said the police had invited its
chairman and national publicity secretary, Chief
Bisi Akande and Alhaji Lai Mohammed respectively, to
share information with them (police) over the
allegation.
It was learnt that though the duo were asked to
report at the police headquarters, Abuja, they were
later directed to report to the Principal Staff
Officer (PSO) of the Inspector General of Police in
Lagos on Friday.
It was also gathered that when Alhaji Lai Mohammed
inquired from a Commissioner of Police at the force
headquarters, Mr. Ali Amodu, whether the directive
issued to them to report in Lagos on Friday was a
ploy to detain them over the weekend, the
commissioner was reported to have assured the AC
spokesman that the police have no plans to detain
them over a mere allegation. The Commissioner was
also reported as saying that the AC officials were
only needed to shed some light on the assassination
allegation.
The statement said though the AC national chairman
could not make it, Alhaji Lai Mohammed went to the
IG’s PSO as scheduled to share the information he
has with them, however noting that the police were
only playing all sorts of tricks just to ensure that
he is detained over the weekend.
